Director Sangeeth Sivan is no more. The filmmaker, best known for Bollywood films like Kya Kool Hain Hum and Apna Sapna Money Money, passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday, May 8. His first film ever was the Malayalam flick Vyooham starring Raghuvaran in 1990. He has also helmed blockbuster films like Mohanlal’s Yodha, Gandharvam and Nirnayam.

Sangeeth Sivan passes away

As reported by Asianet News, the filmmaker passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital for an illness. He is the eldest son of photographer-cinematographer Sivan. He is also the brother of cinematographer-director Santosh Sivan and filmmaker Sanjeev Sivan. The filmmaker is survived by his wife, Jayashree, and children, Sanjana and Shanthanu.

The news of his demise was confirmed by Santosh Sivan to PTI. 

Celebrities pay their respects

Several celebrities took to social media to pay their respects to the deceased filmmaker. Sunny Deol, Riteish Deshmukh, Tusshar Kapoor, Mohanlal and many other condoled the death of the director.

Sharing a photo of Sangeeth Sivan, Sunny Deol wrote, “Shocked to hear about the passing away of my dear friend @sangeethsivan, can’t believe that you are no longer amongst us, but you will always be with us in our hearts and memories. Om Shanti my friend, may your family get the strength to overcome your loss.”

Riteish Deshmukh wrote on X, “Deeply saddened and shocked to know that Sangeeth Sivan Sir is no more. As a newcomer all you want is someone to believe in you and take a chance.. can’t thank him enough for Kya Kool Hai Hum & Apna Sapna Money Money. Soft spoken, gentle and a wonderful human being. Am heart broken today, my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, his wife, kids, brothers. I will miss you Da !!!!! And your infectious laughter!!! Rest in Glory….”

Tusshar Kapoor wrote on the micro-blogging site – previously known as Twitter, “Don’t have words to describe what I’m feeling right now…. A mentor of sorts, someone who introduced me to comedy with #KyakoolHainHum is no more! Sangeeth ji, I had the honour of working with you again recently but it’ll take me a long time to get over this sad news! RIP sir you will be missed! #SangeethSivan #gem”

Mohanlal shared a lengthy note remembering the filmmaker on Facebook. He wrote in Malayalam, “Beloved Sangeet Shivan, who made his mark in directing and cinematography, was more than a friend to me, a loving brother. Yoddha, Gandharva and Nirvana are deeply imprinted in the mind of every Malayali because behind all of them there is his phenomenon. Art Kerala will fondly remember Sangeet, the great genius, and the characters he created will remain immortal. A painful farewell to my dear brother.”

May Sangeeth Sivan’s soul rest in peace.
